When the unexpected happens, it can throw off your whole schedule and create unnecessary stress. Our Hyundai service center is here to help. Knowing what to do when you experience a flat tire helps alleviate any anxiety. Blaise Alexander Hyundai of Altoona has certified technicians to handle all of your service needs — here’s how to change a flat tire in case of a roadside emergency.
Move Your Vehicle to Safety
Before you can tackle a flat tire, you need to be sure you move to a safe location. Pull over as soon as possible to the shoulder of the road or into a side street or parking area. You will need to be away from oncoming traffic so you have enough room to change the tire safely. Put on your hazard lights, and if you have caution signs, set them out, too.
Locate Your Spare Tire and Jack
Your spare tire is usually found under the mat in your trunk. Locate the spare tire, the jack, and the tire wrench and remove them, placing the items beside the flat tire. Loosen the tire bolts and place the jack under your car raising your vehicle about six inches — enough to allow you to remove the flat tire.
Replace the tire with your spare and tighten the lug nuts by hand, then lower the jack and tighten the lug nuts completely. This will allow you to temporarily drive the vehicle to get further help.
